Can you create a DS-2019 for a dependent family member who will come to the U.S. for a brief visit?

ISSS is unable to issue a J-2 DS-2019 for just a few weeks. Therefore, when we issue a DS-2019 for a J-2 dependent, their end date will be the same as the J-1 exchange visitor’s.

To issue a DS-2019 for a dependent family member, ISSS requires additional documentation to show that the scholar has sufficient funds to support them, along with verification that the dependent has health and repatriation insurance as needed in all J-1/J-2 Exchange Visitors for the entire duration of the program reflected on the DS-2019 form.

Suppose a dependent family member plans to be in the U.S. for a brief time. In that case, they should consider applying for a B-2 visitor visa which requires no university sponsorship, no DS-2019 forms, and no proof of insurance.
