A Department is not obligated to keep a J scholar for the entire period of the program stated on the DS-2019, if things don’t work out. Likewise, an exchange visitor’s participation in a J-program doesn’t obligate them to stay. However, ISSS strongly encourages the department and the exchange visitor to notify each other as early as possible of any changes in plans.
